Breeding system of Embothrium coccineum (Proteaceae) in two populations on different slopes of the Andes RChHN
ROVERE,ADRIANA E; SMITH-RAMÍREZ,CECILIA; ARMESTO,JUAN J; PREMOLI,ANDREA C.
Plant breeding systems are considered to reflect species' life history characteristics, selection due to biotic or abiotic factors, pollination conditions, or a combination of these. Reproductive systems may vary over ecological gradients. The breeding system of the ornithophilous Embothrium coccineum (Proteaceae) from temperate South America was studied by pollination treatments: manual self-pollination, manual cross-pollination, automatic self-pollination, and natural pollination. These treatments were conducted in a coastal western and an Andean eastern population. Embothrium coccineum was found to be self-incompatible and highly dependent on the pollinating agent at both sites. However, pollen limitations were greater in the coastal population, as...

Coincidence of flowering time and the productivity and quality of cauliflower hybrid seeds Scientia Agricola
Verdial,Marcelo Fontanetti; Cardoso,Antonio Ismael Inácio; Lima,Márcio Santos de; Chaves,Francisco Célio Maia.
The missing of flowering synchronization between the self-incompatible lines in a crop field of cauliflower hybrid seeds besides making the seed production smaller can compromise the genetic purity of them. The coincidence of the flowering time between two cauliflower lines was examined to study its effect on the productivity and quality of hybrid seeds. The treatments consisted of six different sowing dates, every fifteen days, using a self-incompatible tropical line pollinated by a winter line which does not present self-incompatibility. The following characteristics were evaluated: leaf average area and number of flowers per plant, number of siliques per plant, number and weight of seeds per plant, weight of thousand seeds and average number of seeds...

Floral biology of cacauhy (Theobroma speciosum - Malvaceae) BABT
Souza,Márcio Silva de; Venturieri,Giorgini Augusto.
In the present work, cacauhy's (Theobroma speciosum) floral biology was studied. Flower buds split their sepals at 14h reaching its maximum at 22h, but all flowers were fully opened at 6:00 h of the following morning. Stigmatic branches showed exudates, reaching maximum between 6:00 h and 10:00 h at the same day. Ligules and petal hoods were the floral parts with highest intensity of odour. Flowers were receptive along all the morning and noon of the anthesis day. Approximately 65% of the flowers were naturally pollinated, but only 0.85% of them set a fruit. Abscission occurred on its higher frequency at 6:00 h of the second day after anthesis. Controlled pollinations showed that cacauhy was self-incompatible species.

Functional specialization and phenotypic generalization in the pollination system of an epiphytic cactus Acta Botanica
Martins,Cristiane; Freitas,Leandro.
ABSTRACT Plant-pollinator interactions range from obligatory specialists to facultative generalists, and floral morphology and pollination system may not match completely. The floral biology, reproductive system and floral visitors of a species of the tribe Rhipsalideae were investigated with a focus on the consistency between the pollination system and the floral phenotype. Rhipsalis neves-armondii is an obligate xenogamous species, due to self-sterility. Its flowers are white, small and diurnal, and radially symmetrical. These features, along with their small amount of nectar, characterize the flowers as phenotypic generalists. The most frequent pollinators were a solitary oligolectic species of Andrenidae (Rhophitulus solani), two species of Meliponinae...

Identification of the Er1 resistence gene and RNase S-alleles in Malus prunifolia var. ringo rootstock Scientia Agricola
Agapito-Tenfen,Sarah Zanon; Dantas,Adriana Cibele de Mesquita; Denardi,Frederico; Nodari,Rubens Onofre.
Woolly apple aphid (WAA; Eriosoma lanigerum Hausm.) is a major insect pest that has significant economic impact on apple growers worldwide. Modern breeding technologies rely on several molecular tools to help breeders select genetic determinants for traits of interest. Consequently, there is a need for specific markers linked to the genes of interest. Apple scions and rootstocks have an additional barrier to the introduction of pest resistance genes due to the presence of self-incompatibility S-RNase alleles. The genetic characterization and early identification of these alleles can amplify the contribution of a breeding program to the selection of resistant genitors that are as compatible as possible. In this study, we identified the Er1 gene involved in...

In vivo self-incompatibility response in the wild potato Solanum chacoense bitter JBAG
Capurro,M.A; Medina Piles,V; Camadro,E.L.
In tuber-bearing Solanum species (potatoes), S-locus mediated self-incompatibility is under gametophytic control. In this system, self-fertilization is avoided when the same S-allele is expressed in both pistil and pollen. Because the ultrastructural details of the self-incompatibility response in this group of species is unknown, the aim of this study was to identify the cellular events involved in this response by using the diploid species S. chacoense Bitter as a model. To this end, pollinations were carried out in two genotypic combinations previously identified as (1) compatible and (2) self-incompatible (self-pollination) for the S-locus. Pollinated pistils were fixed on an hourly basis and observed under a transmission electron microscope to detect...

Oil collecting bees and Byrsonima cydoniifolia A. Juss. (Malpighiaceae) interactions: the prevalence of long-distance cross pollination driving reproductive success Anais da ABC (AABC)
SAZAN,MORGANA S.; BEZERRA,ANTONIO DIEGO M.; FREITAS,BRENO M..
Oil-collecting bees are the natural pollinators of oil-flower plants, but little is known about the pollination process and the effectiveness of their pollination service to the reproductive success of their host plants. In species of Byrsonima the reproductive system have been described as auto-compatible or self-incompatible. We studied the reproductive system ofByrsonima cydoniifolia, the fructification by means of short, medium and long-distance cross pollinations, the morphology and floral biology and the pollination interactions with species of oil-collecting bees. By means of controlled pollinations we found self-incompatibility caused by abortion of most self-pollinated flowers and demonstrated that the prevailing cross pollination ensuring the...

Pollination biology of melittophilous legume tree species in the Atlantic Forest in Southeast Brazil Acta Botanica
Pinheiro,Mardiore; Brito,Vinicius Lourenço Garcia de; Sazima,Marlies.
ABSTRACT This study describes the floral phenology and morphology, reproductive biology and pollinators for eight legume tree species, Schizolobium parahyba, Senna macranthera, and Senna multijuga (Caesalpinioideae), as well as Andira fraxinifolia, Lonchocarpus cultratus, Pterocarpus violaceus, Swartzia oblata, and S. simplex (Papilionoideae), in the Atlantic Forest in Southeast Brazil. All the studied species showed an annual flowering pattern, and almost all are of the cornucopia-flowering type, with the only exception being Swartzia oblata, which was of the steady-state type. In general, the legume flowers studied are conspicuous, mostly medium-sized, and offer nectar and/or pollen as a resource. Self-incompatibility associated with the production of...

Pollination biology of the endangered columnar cactus Cipocereus crassisepalus: a case of close relationship between plant and pollinator Acta Botanica
Martins,Cristiane; Oliveira,Reisla; Aguiar,Ludmilla M.S.; Antonini,Yasmine.
ABSTRACT The family Cactaceae possesses considerable floral diversity and is exclusively zoophilic. Cipocereus crassisepalus is an endangered species of columnar cactus, whose floral characteristics fit the chiropterophily syndrome. This study aimed to assess the correspondence between floral traits and pollinators and whether the pollination system of C. crassisepalus is specialized, as suggested by the hypothesis of geographical dichotomy. Hand pollination treatments demonstrated that C. crassisepalus depends on cross-pollen flow mediated by pollinators to set fruit and seeds. Nocturnal film recordings, diurnal observations, analyses of pollen loads of flower visitors and visitor exclusion experiments provided strong evidence that bats are the sole...

Pollination of two species of Vellozia (Velloziaceae) from high-altitude quartzitic grasslands, Brazil Acta Botanica
Jacobi,Claudia Maria; del Sarto,Mário César Laboissiérè.
The pollinators and breeding system of two species of Vellozia (Velloziaceae) from high-altitude quartzitic grasslands in SE Brazil were studied. Vellozia leptopetala is shrubby and grows solely on rocky outcrops, V. epidendroides is herbaceous and grows on stony soils. Both bear solitary, hermaphrodite flowers, and have massive, short-lasting annual blooms. We evaluated the level of self-compatibility and need for pollinators of 50 plants of each species and 20-60 flowers per treatment: hand self- and cross-pollination, spontaneous pollination, agamospermy and control. The behavior of floral visitors on flowers and within plants was recorded. Both species are mostly self-incompatible, but produce a small number of seeds by self-fertilization. The...

SEX EXPRESSION, BREEDING SYSTEM AND POLLINATORS OF Piper caldense (PIPERACEAE) IN THE BRAZILIAN ATLANTIC FOREST Acta biol.Colomb.
VARGAS-ROJAS,Diana Lucia; VIEIRA,Milene Faria.
ABSTRACT Neotropical Piper species have bisexual flowers. Such reproductive trait is considered basal in this pantropical genus. However, neotropical species having unisexual (staminate) flowers along with bisexual ones have also been reported. Dichogamy is common in the genus, associated with either self-compatibility or -incompatibility, as well as with entomophily. We analyzed a natural population of Piper caldense in a Atlantic Forest area (Viçosa municipality, Minas Gerais state, southeastern Brazil). Preliminary observations indicated that the species produces two flower types. We analyzed flower sex in spikes of 50 plants. We obtained additional information through morphological and anatomical studies and scanning electron microscopy analyses. The...
